Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am trying to send a large file(1.7gb) and found that uploading to sharing site like rapidshare or megaupload types are not really helpful..Primarily because my net connection often gets disconnected and it's a bit difficult for me.. Then I came across an article that showed how we can setup a filezilla ftp server and share the folder so that it can be downloaded from anywhere!! I followed this video tutorial How To Turn Your PC Into An FTP (File) Server For Free

I followed the steps and was able to access the directory from the same system through a browser..But when I tried to connect to the server from my other laptop it's just not able to..where am I going wrong?? In the address I am giving ftp://117.205..(the ip address of my server computer) but still not able to connect..Please help..

Have you checked the firewall on the computer & on the router? Most routers have built in firewalls and you'll need to set it to forward port 21 to your computers internal address – sam Jul 2 '11 at 15:31

samarudge has part of the firewall setup.

You probably also need to identify a range of ports that Filezilla will utilize for its passive mode transfers and also forward those ports across your router/firewall/NAT. There is a section within the Filezilla server configuration which deals with its passive mode configuration.
