I just spun up a new Hyper-V server running Server 2008 R2 Core which I am planning on using as a dedicated FTP server. I finished installing all the windows update server packs, but right as I was about to install the IIS/FTP roles, I noticed through the task manager that the processor utilization (setup to use a single processor) keeps maxing out at 100% for about 10 seconds every minute. I used Process Explorer to isolate the specific service and found it to just be the generic svchost.exe process. Delving further into that specific process, I found that within that process there were 10 services running. By stopping each service individually, I have found that the SENS (System Event Notification Service) was the culprit. I can now stop the SENS service and the processor utilization stays around 0%, but I think that this is an important process to have running, isn't it? What would cause this clean installation to have this service continuously maxing out the processor? What else should I try to troubleshoot the issue? I tried installing the integration services update to make sure the network drivers were updated, but no change after that.

I went ahead and re-installed the OS and the problem doesn't seem to reappear, so perhaps just some random configuration glitch. – bmccleary Jul 7 '11 at 15:50
