We're considering switching to Google Apps Enterprise (actually, Education) for our internal email service. However, we've been surprised to find a general lack of backup options that are up to the level we're used to. I've looked at Spanning Backup and Backupify, but neither of these gives the administrator the ability to capture a complete backup of his Google Apps data (i.e., all users).

Is the consensus just that everyone trusts Google not to lose their data (and to hand it over if you want to leave), or do they rely on email archiving such as Postini, or how do they satisfy their backup requirements when using Google Apps?

I can only speak for my university, but we have no plans to have a separate backup of Google Apps content.

We briefly discussed using Postini for separate archiving, but since we've found no legal or institutional compliance requirement to provide its abilities, we've determined its added costs, complexity and management aren't in our interests.

FYI: We decided to go with Backupify.
