Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I recently started renting a server with a hardware RAID controller. It came with software called Adaptec Storage Manager Agent (RaidMan, a java process).

This agent is always running and using ~1% of the CPU and RAM on a completely unused, idle system.

IBM's documentation makes it sound like the agent is necessary for the proper operation of a RAID. If I kill the process I don't notice any problems with reading or writing files. Do I really need to have the agent program running?

Personally I wouldn't be all that worried about a process that's using ~1% of the CPU. –  joeqwerty Jul 11 '11 at 15:59

I need every % I can get out of this box, especially the RAM. That 80MB it's wasting is several more concurrent users per server. –  Dan Grossman Jul 11 '11 at 16:28
