All,

I am working on an application that will use SQL Server 2008 in a very high I/O web application. I need to come up with hardware configuration that is has a nice balance of performance and scalability. Note: our app does a ton of hashing, string manipulation, searches over large datasets etc.

I've read some of these things below and I'm hoping to get a sense of their validity but also take it a step further and nail down just what I should be using in terms of a configuration.

Things I've heard (love your input): 1) You gain performance by placing your indexes on a solid state drive 2) OS, Logs, Database should all be on seperate drives 3) Raid 5 is a performance killer, Raid 1 is a good option for performance/failover

And finally, what do you all recommend. Keep in mind, this is a startup without a ton of money.

Thanks!
