Is there a way to test RAM from within running Windows 2003? I suspect bad ram but don't want to plan an outage to test it (especially that getting into server room isn't the easiest). I know about tools that allow to test it with closed system but that's not what I need now.

Does your server have onboard management like iLO, ILOM, or DRAC? It should track ECC errors and other RAM problems. It would also identify the bad chip. – Chris S♦ Jul 14 '11 at 12:43
It's old IBM x3650 MT:7979. Don't think it has remote management but I think it does have some tools. But this means reboot and outage. – MadBoy Jul 14 '11 at 12:50

Yes, random reboots and it happened directly after I have changed 1GB of RAM into 8GB of RAM (although system is only Windows 2003 STD so i see 4GB in system). – MadBoy Jul 14 '11 at 13:39
Since this is happening after a module change, it could be that the modules aren't quite seated properly - though reseating them would also require an outage. It's also possible that the larger modules are generating more heat, your random reboots could be thermal related - any indications of temperatures being higher than expected? – Mike Insch Jul 14 '11 at 14:18
