Questions about specific hosting providers, server specs, and the suchlike are frowned upon on Server Fault, usually being closed as "too localized", or "off topic", because Server Fault isn't a good site for working out what resources you need to run a given website (because it usually requires extended discussion, is inherently subjective, and so forth).

My aim with this question is to collect a list of good sites where people who have a need to discuss the pros and cons of various hosting providers, as well as the sort of requirements they'd need for hosting a particular scale/type of site, can and visit, so that in the future Server Fault questions on those topics can be referred to this question, saving everyone a lot of grief and being as helpful as we can, within the bounds of Server Fault's remit.

For anyone who wonders why these sorts of questions aren't suitable, here are some meta questions on the subject:

This is borderline-topical here. Webmasters may be a better spot for it. webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/14994/… – sysadmin1138 Jul 20 '11 at 11:32

And when we don't get anyone asking these sorts of questions here any more, we can migrate this question to webmasters. Until then, though, the whole point of this question is to serve as a "dupe anchor" for all those other questions we get here on a daily basis. – womble Jul 20 '11 at 23:35

I have worked in the hosting industry off and on for 10 years and the one forum everyone reads and is worried about having their dirty laundry aired on is WHT. – n8whnp Jul 30 '11 at 4:32

I can add http://www.hostingsthatsuck.com/ to the list of places to look for hosting that doesn't suck (proviso: ALL HOSTING COMPANIES SUCK - As with anything else you need to find one that sucks orthogonally to your use case.)

I think the best method here (and most likely to keep working) is to google the type of hosting you want (cloud, VPS, dedicated server, etc.) and look at providers that come up.

Make a list of the ones that seem the least sucky, and then google them in the following ways: $PROVIDER, $PROVIDER reviews, $PROVIDER sucks. The site I mention above basically does this for you.

Don't forget that if it's opinion you want rather than direct fact you can always try the 'Comms Room' chat page (up there at the top of this page) - though we often discuss a lot more than just IT (often sandwiches and cheese).

This Server Fault question has a list of several sites with comparisons of "cloud" hosting providers.
