Still debating wether to get a HighPoint RocketRaid 2300 card for a RAID5 setup. It offers OCE, but as I understand, that means I can "easily" add more drives to the array without loosing data. But what about replacing drives with larger ones?

Say I start with 4 1TB drives. What if I later want to replace those with 4 2TB drives? Would OCE allow me to do that? I figured I could replace one drive at a time and once all 4 have been replaced I'd have a functional array of 4 2TB drives.

Does it work that way?

I think most RAID controllers can create a 2nd RAID 5 volume in the new space. Some (a few?) can grow the existing volume to fill the new space, but HighPoint I don't know. If you try growing online, get a verified backup first, and think about what you want to do with the volumes(s) in your OS...their growth potential may vary. – Paul Jul 20 '11 at 1:38
Thanks for that. Anyone knows for sure what kind of OCE is supported by the HighPoint card? – haukurhaf Jul 20 '11 at 22:44
