Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

My website is supposed to be running over ssl. However, this has recently broken for some of the pages - if the user types in https://xx.com, they get forwarded to http://xx.com. I think this must be a server issue rather than an issue with the application code, as by the time the various pageLoad events fire the site is already working on http.

The weird thing is that this happens on only some of the pages of the site. However, after carefully comparing the code for the pages that work, and the pages that don't, I cant see any difference between them that might cause this.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to what might be causing this? I'm not particularly familiar with IIS, but after carefully looking over the (fairly limited) array of configuration options, nothing that might be forcing a redirect stands out. I tried turning on 'Require Secure channel', but the redirects still happen (and the server coughs up an error page.)

Hint: Use Tamper Data to read the HTTP headers. Just to determine if this is a HTTP redirection or a HTML redirection. –  SamK Jul 26 '11 at 16:35
Hmm, that was handy, thanks. Apparently the header returned is "Found -302", indicating that the resource has been moved to the http:// address. Any Idea how I turn that off? –  Oliver Jul 26 '11 at 17:04
There was a question on Stack Overflow two years ago about this; similar posts have appeared on the IIS forums. Most of what I've seen point to load balancing – do you have anything like that set up? Also, is this easily reproducible (eg every time you request page X it works, but every time you request page Y you get 302)? –  fission Jul 27 '11 at 4:15
It's reproducible - it only happens for certain pages. However, after I restored the site to backups from months ago (before it started happening) I still got the 302. I shall take a look and see if there is anything with load balancing going on, thanks. –  Oliver Jul 27 '11 at 9:47
