I have an issue with remote desktop on a server running Server 2003 Pro x64. If I use RDC to remote into it, I connect and am presented with the login screen. If I enter my admin credentials, it says access denied and terminates the session. However, if I reconnect (or if I use it the first time, the result is not reconnect dependent) and login with a local user account and not a domain account - it works fine and I can login. I've checked the local policy and there are no settings that would prevent a domain user from logging in and I've added the Domain Admins group to the remote users group. Anything obvious I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

[EDIT 1] I neglected to mention, if this is any help, that the domain is running in a Server 2008 R2 functional level and I'm attempting to connect from a Windows 7 Enterprise workstation.

  1. Is the server joined to the domain?
  2. How are you entering your domain credentials?

The server is joined to the domain. When I login on the remote server (2K3x64), I enter my username, password, and then select domain from the list. It says I'm not authorized. I reconnect, login with an account on that machine and I'm golden. – Josh Blair Jul 30 '11 at 2:17
Check the domain policies and for the server in AD. Any other servers with similar challenges? – user48838 Jul 30 '11 at 4:06
Nope - just the one, which is why it's so frustrating. – Josh Blair Aug 2 '11 at 3:08
You might consider deleting the server from AD and rejoining - just in case there is something "not right" with the server's membership. – user48838 Aug 2 '11 at 4:24
Hi, just so there's no appearance of impropriety happening here, I traced the problem to the build that was being used prior to my arrival. I have since rebuilt the machine using 2K8R2 and all is well. Thank you for your suggestions. – Josh Blair Aug 30 '11 at 16:57
