Is the service running? What OS is this? More information is required. –  user3914 Aug 5 '11 at 5:08

Are you trying to connect from a remote machine? If so this is blocked by default.

Is the SQL Service running?

Is the SQL Browser running?

Is the firewall blocking your connection?

Is TCP enabled on the SQL service?

Can you ping the machine?

Can you telnet to the TCP port that the SQL service is listening on?
