I'd like to have a continually running program, that emails me and plays a sound telling me a stream is down, if and when such an event occurs.

I have Ubuntu on a laptop I'd like to run a test program / script from (but might also run stuff on the VPS if needed.)

I've Googled already to no avail, and tried a suggested solution, which it turns out doesn't work.

If you'd like to downvote, please offer feedback on why.

Curious why this is scored -1 and I have -2 reputation points for asking this. Would have thought being alerted to server faults would be appropriate on here? – Luke Stanley Aug 24 '11 at 22:37
You probably got downvoted because it appears as though you did little to no research on the topic. – ACase Aug 24 '11 at 22:52
Thanks for weighing in with the feedback. Interesting, appearances aside, I Googled for about 15 minutes to no avail. Is it recommended to state what steps were taken, e.g: failed search terms? I would have thought, Serverfault is better at contrasting different monitoring approaches than Google anyway. Too bad StackOverflow rep isn't factored in at all here. – Luke Stanley Aug 24 '11 at 23:07
77 reputation points at SO should make your question a lot better? – mailq Aug 24 '11 at 23:16

Question was not clear, i had to read the question a few times and combine it with the title till i kinda got an idea about what you were talking about, if there is important information in the title make sure it is also included in the body of the question. it helps if you include some details about what kind of test program, is it a command line tool? GUI? what is the nature of the program? what is it trying to achieve. the more information you give the better we can help you. – Silverfire Aug 24 '11 at 23:30

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

This utility sounds like it does exactly what you want: http://daelstorm.thegraveyard.org/icecast2-monitor/

Cacti may be helpful too... http://www.lecentre.net/blog/archives/297

Thanks, looks promising. – Luke Stanley Aug 24 '11 at 23:03
Hmm looks like Icecast2 monitor is suited for self-hosting setups not remote VPS, and it seems Cacti is geared to graphing. I don't need any graphs right now. Thanks though. – Luke Stanley Aug 24 '11 at 23:26
Interesting that this is now considered not a real question by mailq, Zoredache, womble, Ben Pilbrow, and WesleyDavid. I'm astonished how unhelpful some people can be, but thank you again ACase for being some kind of light. – Luke Stanley Aug 25 '11 at 0:33
