I am attempting to install Zend Optimizer 3.3.9 in conjunction with Apache+Php5.2 to improve performance of a slow X-Cart installation.

The documentation/references surrounding X-Cart suggest that Zend Optimizer can improve performance.

I have followed the instructions in the read-me included with the download that includes adding the following to my php.ini file:

2. Add the following line to your php.ini file:
Linux and Mac OS X: zend_extension=<full_path_to_ZendOptimizer.so>

Zend's User Guide directs the user to use a ./install.sh script which is now deprecated

I have done so, restarted my server, confirmed that the ZendOptimizer.so file has read/write access, however, phpinfo();, $php -v both report only the ionCube Loader as being the only installed module (despite no reference in the php.ini file? - it must be loaded somewhere I'm not aware of, and I'll leave that too my naive knowledge of Apache/PHP) but I just don't think this should be so hard!!!

Mind you I am not running Zend Server, just want to use the Optimizer component to improve my PHP performance, but I've found wildly conflicting documentation.

All the other PHP accelerators are equally as confusing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PHP_accelerators

They are either: 1. For older versions of PHP, or 2. require me to use phpize to build, and or some variety of steps that I don't have features installed in my VPS to get working when I just want improved PHP performance.

Do I need to do something different with the 'zend_extension' line?
