I am running Cfengine 2 on a Scientific Linux 6 box. This host is new and doesn't have many modifications yet. IT has an IPv4 address, but does not have an IPv6 address. We have not done anything to specifically disable IPv6 (this host runs with the default behavior).

# cfagent --version
GNU cfengine 2.2.10

When I run cfagent,

# cfagent -q -K
cfengine:host1: Couldn't look up address v6 for : Temporary failure in name resolution
cfengine:host1: Id-authentication for host1.example.org failed
cfengine:host1: Couldn't look up address v6 for : Temporary failure in name resolution
cfengine:host1: Id-authentication for host1.example.org failed

I think the key message here is Couldn't look up address v6 for :. The colon : looks wrong to me. Can anyone tell me what might cause this error?

Yes, I realize that Cfengine 3 has been out for a while. Some people have experienced this same issue with Cfengine 3. However like many organizations, we're not ready to migrate away from Cfengine 2 yet.
