all. I downloaded the ruby source from the offical site http://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.9/ruby-1.9.2-p290.tar.gz. But I got some compiling errors when I did as the README told me:

tar -xzf ruby-1.9.2-p290.tar.gz
cd ruby-1.9.2-p290
./configure
make

It produced:

Can someone tell me what I missed? Thanks in advance!

I've resolved the problem! That's because my 'head' command is missing! The configure command depends it. Thus my previous configure commands produced incorrect Makefile because head was missing. By the way, I don't remember when I deleted that command, and I'm afraid I've never done that. I'm using Godaddy's VPS. –  Robert Sep 15 '11 at 9:50

There's an answer that suggests this as the fix...you might want to accept it as the solution. –  Bart Silverstrim Mar 23 at 14:31

Your system is missing the head command, which is part of the coreutils package. This particular package contains a variety of very commonly used command line tools. You can try reinstalling it with:

yum reinstall coreutils

Though, I see you mentioned being on a VPS from GoDaddy. Unfortunately they give you a "CentOS" which GoDaddy themselves have modified in various ways and may not be built correctly. I suggest moving away from there, if you haven't already done so.

Looks like there's a typo in the makefile somewhere. In one (or more) of the gcc strings, instead of the -o flag (specifying the outfile), it just has o.

But the makefile is auto produced by configure, and I have never edited it. –  Robert Sep 15 '11 at 7:48
