OK, this has got me pretty baffled -- this morning I suddenly couldn't connect to my Mail Server anymore. Checking mail.log, or attempting to manually restart the Dovecot service, I get the error:

Auth process died too early

Mind you, as far as I'm aware, nothing has changed. This has been working just fine for a month or more. After Googling around a bit, I found several threads (all for folks who were trying to get Dovecot working for the first time) indicating that Dovecot couldn't find a MySQL library file. Since I'm using a MySQL database for authentication, I tried logging into the MySQL server to check that everything was OK. It was. Then I tried start Dovecot again.

It worked.

What??

So suddenly Dovecot didn't want to work anymore, for somewhere between 1-24 hours (last time I successfully checked mail was sometime yesterday), and then, suddenly, it does??

I can't afford for my mail to just randomly not work. Any thoughts as to things I can check on here?

Server Info:
Host: Linode.com
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit)
Postfix 2.7.0
Dovecot 1.2.9
MySQLd 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.10

"It's in the logs, Luke." What happened to you MySQL in that time period? What is around the given line mentioning Dovecot? Or other strange things in the logs. – mailq Sep 19 '11 at 16:46
