I would like to know when my website goes down -- what are the best service to monitor this and why?

Pingdom.com is great. It's free for single sites. They do ping times from servers all over the globe. Also tools.pingdom.com is helpful for page load times and DNS. The main point of the site is to test uptime and is fully customizable. They can send emails or texts when the site is down too.
