I'm attempting to setup Mono/ASP.NET 4.0 on my Apache server (which is running on Ubuntu). Thus far, I've been following a few tutorials/scripts supplied here, and here.

As of now:

  • Apache 2.2 is installed (accessible via 'localhost')
  • Mono 2.10.5 is installed

However, I'm struggling to configure Apache correctly... apparently the Virtual Host setting isn't doing its job and invoking the mod_mono plugin, nor is it even pulling source from the proper directory. While the Virtual Host setting points to '\srv\www\localhost', it clearly is pulling content instead from 'var/www/', which I've found is the default DocumentRoot for virtual hosts.

I can confirm:

  • "/opt/mono-2.10/bin/mod-mono-server4" exists.
  • Virtual hosts file is being read, since undoing the comment in the main httpd.conf changed the root directory from 'htdocs' to 'var/www/'
  • The Mono installation is at least semi-capable of running ASP 4.0, as evidenced by running XSP, navigating to 0.0.0.0:8080/ and getting an ASP.NET style error page with "Mono ASP 4.0.x" at the bottom.

Can anyone point out how to fix these configurations and get Mono linked up with Apache?

Here are my configs and relevant information:

/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/foo_log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/usr/local/apache2"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

# Virtual Hosts
#
# If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about

# Please see the documentation at

If you've installed the mono runtime, then what you need to make your applications work is to create a symbolic link to the new installation of mono ... and mono-V when writing instead of leaving the version 2.6.7 using version 2.10, the link you create is as follows:

    ln -s -f /opt/mono-2.10/bin/mono /usr/bin/mono
0

Is the module loaded appropriately?

  • LoadModule mono_module /path/to/mono/module/mod_mono.so

Also, you need to add this in your config:

  • AddType application/x-asp-net .aspx .ashx .asmx .ascx .asax .config .ascx
  • DirectoryIndex Default.aspx

Applications (virtual hosts) are defined in .webapp files => hostname.com.webapp

<apps>
        <web-application>
                <name>Name of site</name>
                <vpath>/</vpath>
                <path>/path/to/root/</path>
                <vhost>hostname.com</vhost>
        </web-application>
</apps>

And in order to load your .webapp files, add this to your config:

  • MonoApplicationsConfigDir default /path/to/dir/with/webappfiles

I hope this helps or atleast point you in the right direction.

I know this question is old but how about this:

  1. Install mod_mono

    sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-mono mono-apache-server4

2.Configure mod_mono

sudo nano /etc/apache2/mods-available/mod_mono.conf

AddType application/x-asp-net .aspx .ashx .asmx .ascx .asax .config .ascx
DirectoryIndex index.aspx

Include /etc/mono-server4/mono-server4-hosts.conf
  1. Setup your Virtual Host

Prepare your public directory

mkdir /home/alduin/www

Make your directory readable by Apache

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /home/alduin/www

Create apache configuration file

/etc/apache2/sites-available/default

ServerName yourdomain.co.uk
ServerAlias www.yourdomain.co.uk
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/yourdomain.co.uk-error.log
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/yourdomain.co.uk-access.log combined
DocumentRoot /home/alduin/www/
 MonoServerPath yourdomain.co.uk "/usr/bin/mod-mono-server4"
MonoDebug yourdomain.co.uk true # disable it in production
 MonoApplications yourdomain.co.uk "/:/home/alduin/"

<Location "/">
 Allow from all
 Order allow,deny
 MonoSetServerAlias yourdomain.co.uk
 SetHandler mono
 SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
 SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI "\.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$" no-gzip dont-vary

 AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript

Restart

sudo service apache2 restart
