I’m the administrator of two Debian servers running OpenVZ. Today there was a kernel update available for both machines. So I installed the new kernel and restarted the host. After the restart I could access all VEs via vzctl but some of them didn’t have any network connectivity. In other VEs my app containers (Rails applications) didn’t start properly. I had to restart every (!) VE on both servers to get them up and running again. ifconfig said that there was a valid network configuration but no access from outside. On some of those VEs I’ve got Rails apps running which are using PostgreSQL as their database backend. The PostgreSQL server denied the network connection requested from the application server. After restarting the VE everything was fine again. All the VEs are running Ubuntu 10.04.3.

Did anyone else have similar problems? In my university I have got several Proxmox instances running OpenVZ, but after restarting the hosts over there none of these problems appear.

It’s not that hard to restart all hosts manually but it remains kind of annoying and there has to be something I did wrong during the setup of these two servers mentioned above.
