Admins,

I have a Sharepoint Server 2007 instance that I need to migrate to Sharepoint Server 2010.

To complicate matters, the new server will be on a new domain.

I'm basically looking for a step by step guide or as close as I can get. Barring that, I'd like suggestions (and reasons) on whether I should move the existing server to the new domain and then upgrade, or upgrade sharepoint to the new version by adding a server to the old domain, and then move that server to the new domain.

Original Domain: domain.local The new Domain: companyname.com

The old domain is essentially abanadoned. The only things on it are this sharepoint server and a deprecated Exchange server that is no longer in use. The new domain is online and stable, and all other systems have been migrated already.

Here is the server information:

ORIGINAL SERVER

  • Running Windows Server 2008 Small Business Server
  • Is a domain controller
  • SQL Server Version 2005 Express
  • Sharepoint Server 2007 WSF 3.0 (Included with Small Business Server)
  • Approximately 30GB of Data (even though SQL 2005 Express is only supposed to support 4GB)
  • Updated with latest Microsoft Updates

NEW SERVER

  • Running Windows Server 2011 (Server 2008 R2)
  • Is a domain controller
  • SQL Server Express 2008 R2 Express
  • Sharepoint Server Foundation 2010 (Included with Small Business Server)
  • Updated with latest Microsoft Updates
