I have a virtual server hosted with a company called Memset. I'm running Windows Web Server 2008 IIS7 and I am currently hosting 6 domains. I just set up a virtual SMTP server (IIS6 obviously) which is now allowing me to send emails from my domains to the outside world.
I am not, as yet, running any kind of email server and don't have access to anything. Though this is something I will work towards as I learn.
What I am hoping to do next is allow emails sent TO my domains to be forwarded to a nominated, valid, email account. A catch-all type system. For example: if someone sends an email to 'info@my-hosted-domain-1.com' I would want to be able to forward that email to my gmail account. I would also want to apply this functionality to all my hosted domains such that the catch-all rule would forward email to a different email address for each domain. If possible I'd also like to be more specific than a simple catch-all and specify emails to forward.
From reading this forum and searching the net I am getting the idea that this is not possible with the tools I have available to me currently. I see mention of software such as Exim, Google Apps mail server, hMailServer etc etc. but I'm not sure which route to go down.
For now I am hoping I can, as simply as possible, just redirect emails to a few nominated mail accounts. Looking a bit further forward, I'd like to be able to run a small mail server to allow mail boxes for my domains.
I am very new to running a web sever so I hope I have asked this question clearly as I am not familiar with all of the correct terminology yet.
My question is: Can I easily set up forwarding of emails without installing extra software? If I need to install extra software, what would provide this functionality with the smallest footprint and overhead?
Finally: Would it be better, given my longer term goals of a proper mail server, to install a mail server program and, for now, use that to manage forwarding emails? If so, which is going to be best for a low spec server?
