I am setting up small company network in combination with Apple's Open Directory. The server (Mac mini with OS X Server 10.7 installed) is hosted in a datacenter.

The company has 3 locations with each one printer on site. I want all OD users to be able to print to all printers, so the server needs to share these printers.

I've only tried to connect to one location so far, this location has a Canon iRC2880 (UFRII) printer. I forwarded port 631 to the printer and tried to connect using the WAN address using IPP. Because the printer doesn't support PS and hasn't got a PCL driver for Mac I have to use UFRII. UFRII doesn't support IPP so now I'm down to LPD, which I can't get to work remotely.

I came up with the following potential solutions:

  • Create a print server at every location
  • Try to find a PCL driver for Mac so that I can use IPP
  • Try to get LPD to work remotely
  • VPN?
  • Add printer locally, users on other locations will not be able to print to remote printers

I have no clue what to do now, what is my best bet?

Thanks for helping me out.
