I created a .vhd file with disk2vhd.exe from the C system partition with Windows XP as a backup.

Will it work to boot from that vhd file in virtualPC? I created new virtual machine from existing vhd, but when I boot it ends with blue screen and quickly restarts.

thank you for help

if you can use this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415. Otherwise you can make the backup image boot but it will take some work,
