I recently tried to disable the windows firewall on a server, which resulted in the server going offline. I could not ping any of it's ips nor access any of its services.

Is that a setting that causes this when the windows firewall is disabled?

Stopping the Windows Firewall service and telling Windows to stop Windows Firewall are two different actions. You should have disabled Windows Firewall from the Control Panel instead. – Ashley Steel Nov 26 '11 at 2:08
So then, stopping the service would block all connections to the server? That's never happened before. – kurtnelle Nov 27 '11 at 2:21
