We've just run into a serious problem where we cannot remote desktop into our Windows SBS 2008 server and then we tried heading over to the machine to see what's happening, but the screen just stays black. Tried two different screens, none worked.

This came after a reboot this morning.

I have no idea what to do from here?

Does it ping or anything? If not, I'd go for "Pull for the cable" and watch the boot up. It may not even be getting past POST. – Dan Nov 24 '11 at 10:49
It's fully active. Sharepoint, SQL, file share and just about everything else is working. The only problems is that the screen is blank, remote desktop won't connect and exchange doesn't seem to be pulling down mail? – Jacques Nov 24 '11 at 12:51
What brand of server is it? Is it HP? If so, have you configured the ILO? – Moif Murphy Nov 24 '11 at 12:54
I did a hard reboot and everything is working again. Looking at the event logs there seems to be a period a few days ago where a number of DCOM exceptions were recorded, and one or two Exchange and Sharepoint related issues. Not much more than that. Thanks for the help. I wish there was a way to better manage that kind of situation. I'm also beginning to think that SBS is a bad idea on one machine, but I'm too petrified to start moving Exchange off to it's own server. – Jacques Nov 24 '11 at 13:55

I don't think the SBS licensing model allows for Exchange to be installed on a separate server (it would break the wizards). You would have to purchase a separate Exchange license to do that; not sure about CALs. As far as I know, the only SBS service that is allowed on its own server is SQL when you buy SBS 2011 Premium. – Jonathan J Dec 1 '11 at 22:18
