I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid EBS boot from alestic in my Amazon EC2 micro instance. Then I've followed the following tutorial:

http://www.pixelinx.com/2010/10/creating-a-mail-server-on-ubuntu-using-postfix-courier-ssltls-spamassassin-clamav-and-amavis/

to create a mail server. It's a great tutorial, by the way.

I've changed my A and MX dns records to point to the elastic IP address I've associated to my instance. Then I've opened the right ports through my Security Group by using the AWS console.

I've followed exactly the same configuration as the tutorial with no problems and no errors. Then I've sent and email from my gmail account and I can read it when I connect through telnet. I mean (let's say my server is mail.example.com):

telnet mail.example.com 143 (WORKS OK) openssl s_client -connect mail.example.com:993 (WORKS OK)

I can login and fetch the email I sent from my gmail account if I telnet to 143 or 993 ports.

Now I'm trying to retrieve my email from Thunderbird 8.0. This is my account config:

Server Name: mail.example.com Port: 993 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Encrypted password

Then thunderbird says my server does not seem to support encrypted passwords and suggests to change to Normal password. If I do that, then thunderbird says Login Failed and invites me to enter another password.

/var/log/mail.log at server just says the same, LOGIN FAILED.

Can anybody point me in the right direction? You can examine my configuration at:
http://www.pixelinx.com/2010/10/creating-a-mail-server-on-ubuntu-using-postfix-courier-ssltls-spamassassin-clamav-and-amavis/

it's exactly the same. Of course, I've changed my domain and passwords, but the whole thing is the same as there.

I'd appreciate any clue. Thanks in advance.

PD: cat /etc/hostname shows the Amazon EC2 private dns. Should I change it to mail.example.com?

"Normal" password is correct. The LOGIN FAILED is going to be due to some SASL configuration, most likely. – cjc Nov 28 '11 at 21:48
I've noticed it works in Outlook, so it has to be some thunderbird related problem. Thanks anyway. – Jorge Nov 30 '11 at 20:17
