I staged a system and installed the package for ForeFront client security (1.5.1996.0) which I believe to have been created on our local server. I assume it should automatically point back to it and check in, but it's status says "the program can't check for definition updates" "error found:Code 0x80072efd."

I looked in the event logs but don't see any mention of the server. I'd like to make sure the client package is infact managed. I want to know what server it should be checking in with, and any logs about attempts to check in with that server.

What version of Forefront are you running? I know in 2010 you need to run a management script after the install; by default it installs in Standalone mode (basically the exact same thing as MS Security Essentials). Also, regardless of your management mode, FF will fetch updates from Windows Updates. If you have a WSUS server configured it needs to grab those updates for FEP to get them. – Chris S♦ Nov 29 '11 at 19:40

Error 0x80072efd = "Received no response from Windows Update Server". Do you have WSUS configured? Is WSUS configured to download updates for Forefront? Is WSUS configured to automatically approved Definition updates? – Chris S♦ Jan 10 at 19:23
The updates are being pushed though SCCM. I do not believe WSUS is involved. – MathewC Jan 17 at 15:00
SCCM uses WSUS for updates, so you might want to check on that... – Chris S♦ Jan 17 at 15:13
