okay so here is what i did: i gave a static address and setup the DNS both forward and reverse lookup for this server

i got the server to bind to AD through System preferences > Users and Groups > Click on "Login Options" i then got the green light saying that it was connected to my AD. i removed the part in advanced options about the home directory from AD since our schema in AD 2008r2 isnt set to do that.

after this it is hit or miss as to whether or not the network logins are available.

after a few tries and restarts i was eventually able to log in. i set that user to be able to administer to this server.

i then change the Open Directory role in Server Admin to: remain connected and setup an Open Directory Master. all goes well for a while. i am able to authenticate to my AD in Workgroup Manager to see my Users and groups. about 5-10 mins into being able to do all of this, suddenly it appears as though my connection to AD has been cut off because i will not be able to see my AD users in my Server.app and my preferences > users and groups is no longer able to recognize network users.

what is happening and how do i fix this? i need it to remain bound to AD so i can make use of these credentials and such
