Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Figured I'd throw the question out there. Are there any guides or knowledge articles that anyone has put together on the best practices to optimize performance of Windows 7 in a corporate environment? For example if there are settings (ex. NIC settings / OS settings / certain things to turn on and off etc) that will directly impact performance.

Has anyone else rolled out Windows 7 to their environment? If so what were some of the most beneficial tweaks that you've made.

A little background about our environment. It's a 600+ user financial company with both bankers and traders (very demanding users with high expectations). Instead of using roaming profiles we're using a tool called AppSense (you can read about it here: http://www.appsense.com/migration-to-windows-7), which I'm still trying to figure out my opinion about it (not sure if anyone's heard or used it).

Looking forward to hearing from all of you!!!

Thanks, Nick119

No two corporate environments are the same. The answer for my environment won't apply to yours. That said, it's usually a good idea not to tweak much. Microsoft has plenty of engineers that make sure that the default setup is appropriate for almost anyone. Turning off a service here and there isn't going to do a whole lot except make it harder to troubleshoot if things break.

The remainder of your question solicits opinion, which is expressly forbidden in the FAQ, which is linked at the top of the page. You may want to remove it, lest your question be voted closed.

Thank you for your feedback, but I completely disagree with all of it. Of course I understand that no two corporate environments are the same. Windows 7 is still very new to the corporate world and there are definitely many ways to optimize performance to allow for the most productivity for your users. For example turning Windows Aero on or off, folder redirection, etc. I want to hear what tools/tips/tweaks everyone else has used in their environments. – Nick119 Dec 3 '11 at 3:25

@Nick119 Something like folder redirection has more to do with data portability and protection than it does with performance. If you're on a GbE network, most users won't notice. If you're connected to your file server by two soup cans and a string, then yeah, it will hurt. Same with Aero. It adds some productivity features. If you have video cards that can handle it, then no big deal. If you don't, then big deal. You can disagree all you want, but the fact is that this site isn't for open discussion. It's for Q&A. Your question doesn't fit very well with that theme. – MDMarra Dec 3 '11 at 3:29
That's more useful information. Thanks – Nick119 Dec 3 '11 at 4:12
