We've created a free to use web application and we're now looking at how to go beyond just a stand alone application and integrate it more with the typical document management systems (DMS) that enterprises use.

What I'm wondering is whether there's anything approaching a common API between DMSs? Is WebDav the standard, for example? I know Sharepoint is a popular MS offering, but does that offer WebDav too, so I wouldn't have to write anything specific for it? Confluence is popular is this domain, I know plugins are fairly easy, but that's another block of custom development.

If there isn't a common API, does anyone have a factual link to the main players in the field so I could work out which set of systems comprises, say, 80% of the market.

If there is a common interface, like WebDav, does it practically have enough functionality for the common document operations, or do applications end up with per-DMS customizations to achieve what would be considered a reasonable feature set? (the set being, say, open and save on the client and revision history and user auth being supported on the DMS).

What I am absolutely not asking, is what is your favourite DMS, or list the systems you used in your previous job. I suspect that this is a common problem faced by desktop applications used in enterprises as well, so I suspect there is a common answer.

in anything but the very simple case, webdav is a horrible screw-up. RESTful is a lot more sensible. – Tom H Feb 11 at 11:01
