How do I create a static A record in Windows Server 2008 and 2003? I have two domain controllers and I need to specify a static A record on one of them (and have it replicate to the other) for a mail server. How can I accomplish this? Strangely it is hard to find info for it on the Internet. When I try to create a record I have to specify a TTL. When I set TTL to 0, it has no timestamp but it does not say "static" in the timestamp column.

You're confusing the purpose of TTL.

The TTL field specifies the time that the entry is able to be cached by downstream nameservers/client systems.

1 day is a reasonable value for the TTL.

Yes, how stupid of me... but perhaps a stupider question, how do I make a record "static" so it doesn't keep disappearing after a day or so? – jshin47 Jan 9 at 15:27

Just create the record? – SpacemanSpiff Jan 9 at 16:06
Can you audit what's deleting the A record? It shouldn't be disappearing. – MikeyB Jan 9 at 16:20
@MikeyB, how would I go about auditing that? – jshin47 Jan 9 at 19:11
I don't know offhand but would recommending looking for the answer on ServerFault :) – MikeyB Jan 9 at 20:38

Find the correct zone that it belongs in and select Action > New Host (A or AAAA record). It won't disappear. If your DCs are part of the same domain, it'll replicate the A record to the other server.

I'm going to provide you this technet article that will offer a lot of information on DNS, including how to create 'A' records, which is what you want to do: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727018.aspx

Also, if you create an 'A' record, it shouldn't just disappear. If it does, that's a separate issue.

Any information about why such a record would be disappearing? Is it a replication issue? – jshin47 Jan 9 at 16:10
It really sounds like your zone may be being reloaded. Have you checked your DNS Event Log? – Ethabelle Jan 10 at 22:16
