How do I create a static A record in Windows Server 2008 and 2003? I have two domain controllers and I need to specify a static A record on one of them (and have it replicate to the other) for a mail server. How can I accomplish this? Strangely it is hard to find info for it on the Internet. When I try to create a record I have to specify a TTL. When I set TTL to 0, it has no timestamp but it does not say "static" in the timestamp column.

You're confusing the purpose of TTL. The TTL field specifies the time that the entry is able to be cached by downstream nameservers/client systems. 1 day is a reasonable value for the TTL.

Find the correct zone that it belongs in and select Action > New Host (A or AAAA record). It won't disappear. If your DCs are part of the same domain, it'll replicate the A record to the other server.

I'm going to provide you this technet article that will offer a lot of information on DNS, including how to create 'A' records, which is what you want to do: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727018.aspx Also, if you create an 'A' record, it shouldn't just disappear. If it does, that's a separate issue.
