I have specific requirements for a KVM Extender:

  1. Local and Remote connected via network cable (Cat 5e/6) at at least 150m (500 ft)
  2. USB support, no need for PS/2
  3. Able to send Monitor/USB Keyboard/USB Mouse signals (obviously)
  4. Here is the tricky part: compatible with a USB hub (meaning can connect a USB hub into the extender with at least 6 USB peripherals) - OR, the extender has a minimum of 4 USB ports
  5. Optional: Audio
  6. Optional: Duel display (VGA, DVI or HDMI, doesn't matter)

Kinda like duel pianos? Jk. Something to consider as an alternative is VNC. Much like RDP, but not restricted based on you version of Windows (*nix does not have this issue) and works with almost all operating systems. – hydroparadise Jan 12 at 17:02
KVM extender is an external solution that doesn't depend on the network like VNC, you control a remote computer in real time – ToastMan Jan 12 at 18:44
that's silly.. there's little room for debate when my requirements are so specific. – ToastMan Jan 16 at 18:44

Have you considered purchasing an ipkvm unit like the dell 2161 (probably superceeded but it will give you an idea of what I'm on about). The dell unit I mentioned will work with any brand machine, server or desktop, you just need to plug in a dongle to each machine's kvm ports. http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/svrac_2161ds.pdf

Another option could be using server management cards such as Dell DRAC or HP iLO if it is servers you are thinking about. This costs a bit but gives more functionality.

Edit: Can't find the newer dell, maybe I was dreaming but Avocent make something with usb functionality http://www.avocent.com/Products/Category/KVM_Appliances/IP_Appliances/MergePoint_Unity.aspx#tab=details_tab_4 Sorry still no sound and only single screen - I'm sure if you look around though you will find even newer models as that thing only supports up the 1600x1200 while I'm sure I've seen models made for widescreen high res.
