I'd like to upgrade my system IBM x3650-7979 with 16GB or RAM, by installing two sets of Kingston KTH-XW667LP/8G RAM DIMMs. The Kingstons are ECC and fully-buffered, but what about Ranks? CAS latency is 5ms, but I couldn't find the other timings.

This RAM is not officially certified by IBM, but is that really so important? It like to buy them as the DIMMs are low-power and I trust Kingston.

Related IBM compatibility listing.

You'll likely not be able to get warranty work done on the server with non-certified RAM in place. – ErikA Jan 20 at 21:33
The system is ~2009 and second-hand: no warranty anyway. But will it work? The only certified low-power 8GB kit is a Qimonda HYS72T512420EFA-3S-C, but I can't get them new, and used they don't come in matched pairs? Is that important? What's more important, pristine new RAM or 4 used DIMMS from ebay but a certified model? – isync Jan 20 at 21:40

I suggest heading to Crucial.com and downloading their memory advisor tool for your operating system (or alternatively browsing their system list manually). They'll recommend chips that they know work in your system, and if you buy the chips through Crucial based on the Memory Advisor tool they will ship you replacements if the chips they spec'd don't work. – voretaq7 Jan 20 at 21:49
Yes, I know the crucial tool. But either Crucial or Kingston, both are not certified. The tool recommended an equal DIMM to my mentioned Kingstons. But will they work? Is "DDR2 PC2-5300, CL=5, Fully Buffered, ECC" specific enough, so the DIMM is transparent to the system and works? – isync Jan 20 at 22:00
What about ranks? Is it important for the system how the modules on the DIMM are organized? – isync Jan 20 at 22:17
