How do I make all DNS queries go to the primary VPN adapter? With a physical adapter and a VPN adapter as primary some DNS searches seem to be going to the physical adapter. privateDom.net is a public domain, but we have a local privateDom.net of the same name. The lower metric on the VPN adapter should cause it to be the source for DNS lookups.

The Windows 7 DNS Client is using the DNS router specified by the physical network adapter and not the one in the VPN tunnel adapter. This problem can be identified by pings to privateDom.net failing with the wrong address and nslookups of privateDom.net succeeding with the correct address. This error is typical of problems with cached DNS entries and often cleared with an ipconfig /flushdns command. This issue remains even after flushing the DNS cache.

This problem is only occurring when the physical adapter is configured with a local DNS server. Anybody with a U-Verse system has this setup.

The guess is that the DNS Client is going to the local DNS server even if it is not on the preferred adapter.
