I am getting this error while trying to configure PHP 5.4.0 RC6 on my CentOS 6.2 server with cPanel:

configure: error: libXpm.(a|so) not found.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it should have been migrated to Stackoverflow, but now it's too old to migrate

Try adding: --with-libdir=lib64 to your configure command.

You do not have the libXpm package or development libraries installed. If you need this support, then get those packages, if not, then remove the --with-xpm-dir option from your command line.

You appear to be trying to enable a large number of features, you need to take the time to verify that the dev files for each library are installed onto your system.

  • Package libXpm-3.5.8-2.el6.x86_64 already installed and latest version Jan 27, 2012 at 20:09
  • Right, but you probably need a -dev version of that package, which will include the headers need to compile things linked into that library.

  • Package libXpm-devel-3.5.8-2.el6.x86_64 already installed and latest version I checked both of these before I posted the question. Thanks for helping me! Jan 27, 2012 at 20:11
  • Ah, well that sure seems like it would have been important information to add to your question then.

  • I suppose you have double checked that the file libXpm.a or libXpm.so actually exists on the filesystem? Just for kicks, maybe update your question with the full path and an md5sum?

I ended up using:

./configure --disable-fileinfo --enable-bcmath --enable-calendar --enable-exif --enable-ftp --enable-gd-native-ttf --enable-libxml --enable-magic-quotes --enable-mbstring --enable-pdo=shared --enable-soap --enable-sockets --enable-wddx --enable-zend-multibyte --enable-zip --prefix=/opt/phpdev --with-bz2 --with-curl=/opt/curlssl/ --with-freetype-dir=/usr --with-gd --with-gettext --with-imap=/opt/php_with_imap_client/ --with-imap-ssl=/usr --with-jpeg-dir=/usr --with-kerberos --with-libdir=lib64 --with-libexpat-dir=/usr --with-libxml-dir=/opt/xml2 --with-libxml-dir=/opt/xml2/ --with-mcrypt=/opt/libmcrypt/ --with-mysql=/usr --with-mysql-sock=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock --with-mysqli=/usr/bin/mysql_config --with-openssl=/usr --with-openssl-dir=/usr --with-pcre-regex=/opt/pcre --with-pdo-mysql=shared --with-pdo-sqlite=shared --with-pic --with-png-dir=/usr --with-pspell --with-sqlite=shared --with-tidy=/opt/tidy/ --with-xmlrpc --with-xpm-dir=/usr --with-xsl=/opt/xslt/ --with-zlib --with-zlib-dir=/us --with-config-file-path=/opt/phpdev

My server configuration changed since I moved from CentOS 5.7 to CentOS 6.2.
