Is this product truly free to use in a commercial environment? I plan on migrating from ESXi and this seems like the ideal solution.

Yes. Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is free.

Upvote. Keep in mind though, that even though the hypervisor is free, that doesn't mean all your guest OSes are free too. ;) – Ryan Ries Jan 30 at 20:50

Hyperv comes with Windows Server 2008, which isn't free. Also depending on the edition, you get X number of free Virtual OS hosts.

So you could get "free" windows 2008 server as a virtual, but you'd have to buy Windows 2008 Datacenter.
