I am going to be setting up an Ubuntu 11.10 virtual server (linode) to run both php and python applications. I have set up Apache for both php and python, but not both, and seem to recall some issues when I tried it a couple years ago. This question seems to imply there's not much to it but I'm a bit suspicious, is that really all that it requires?

I am not terribly attached to using Apache, if nginx or some other server would make this simpler. Both php and python will be accessing a MySQL database.

So, is there a good tutorial or example of how to set up an Apache or nginx server to handle requests for both PHP (e.g. Wordpress) and python (e.g. django app) on the same site? I have set up new LAMP stacks several times but cannot be considered a competent sysadmin. The website will be very low-volume (a few hundred hits a day) so simplicity of setup over raw speed would make sense.

So, my question is: 1) is having both php and python on the same server going to inevitably add a lot of complexity? 2) is there an advantage of Apache vs. nginx vs. something else for this situation? 3) is there a good resource online showing how to do this?

Any help is appreciated.

I have never had a negative effect from running both on the same platform, including Apache. – Tim Jan 31 at 17:11
