We have a Windows 2008 R2 server which has 2 disks of which one is used as a backup disk for Windows Backup with VSS enabled. We also have MSSQL 2008 R2 running on this server.

If I want to restore a database, what is the recommended practice? Can I just detach the old database, restore the datafiles (mdf & ldf) from the backup and attach this again?

Just do as you said. This is simple and efficient. –  Gregory MOUSSAT Feb 3 '12 at 18:53
OK, this is also no problem when using filestream? Just restore the whole and attach? –  jaap Feb 3 '12 at 18:55
@GregoryMOUSSAT You should really post that as an answer. –  MDMarra Feb 3 '12 at 19:00
