I believe that it is widely anticipated that Microsoft will soon (within the next twelve months) release Windows Server 2012 (sometimes also referred to as Windows Server 8).

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard currently comes with a 32 GB max memory limit. What we want to know is, does anyone out there in server fault land know if Microsoft plans to leave this limit in place in Windows Server 2012 "Standard" edition?

I don't think that any information has been officially/loudly announced in this regard, and I understand that the editions (and the dividing lines between them) might be shuffled with the new release. I am just wondering if anyone has any inside knowledge/rumor/conjecture/heard something/saw something at dev conferences/talks/etc.

What do you guys think? Will the 32 GB memory limit endure or will the sub $1,000 version of Windows Server 2012 allow us to use a reasonable amount of ram?

This is - with all respect - a stupid question. The answer is YES. SOMEONE knows. Some people know. They also are likely bound by NDA not to say. But hey, you do not ask about ewhether somehing is published abou the limit but whether someone knows. Sorry, question answered. Can we go on?

Ok, seirously - I think it wil lbe raised, pure speculation based on me JUST buying a micro atx board for a small server that gets 32gb memroy. The non-Micro-Atx version (full atx) of the same board line goes to 64gb. 32gb is NOT large anymore. I would put my bet on between 64 and 128 gb RAM but I may be off. But it should be more than a higher end micro atx board can handle.

You found a micro atx board that takes 32gb of ram? Care to share? I want a new motherboard for an SFF home server... – Mark Henderson Feb 3 at 20:59
Actually 64gb memory - but the price for that would be RIDICULOUS (around 3xxx euro instead of 250) - 16gb modules are crazy. Just look at the X79 based motherboards. 32gb is standard, one offers 64. LGA 2011 ;) Brand new, yes. Expensive - yes. But it is there now. – TomTom Feb 4 at 5:36
