On a particular server which I have root ssh access to, I have multiple folders that map to different domains.

For example:

example.com
   www
foo.com
   www
bar.com
   www

What I've noticed is that some of these domains have ftp access and some don't. Is there a way to see which have them, and then how do I turn them on?

How are you determining which have ftp access? – stew Feb 8 at 4:03
@stew: don't know, that's part of the issue. Right now i'm just FTPing using the domain name, some work, some get rejected. (Not a user/pass rejection, but a server rejection). – kylex Feb 8 at 5:11

You should look into pure-ftpd, which enables the use of Virtual Users so that you don't have to use shell users. It's very easy to configure too, and lets you chroot the users in their home directories.

If you want us to help you troubleshoot your current issue, we'll need more details on the ftp software you're using, its version and how you configured the users.
