Really hit a wall on this one. I've been trying to configure Nginx to handle both static content and proxy to PHP-FPM. But, all my load tests (using ab) continue to cause the PHP-FPM process to crash.

This occurs even if I am not requesting a PHP file (css or image) during the load test. I've read everything I can find on configuring Nginx, but I must be missing something.

This is running on a rather beefy web server, with 8 cores, 16gb of RAM and I've only been testing 500 concurrent users.

This is nginx/1.0.12 on RHEL.

Here is my Nginx config: http://pastebin.com/fcUVPa6n

Have you adjusted open files limit? Are you running ab on the same host? –  bas Mar 16 '12 at 21:00
Yep. I've adjusted the sysctl settings to match the file limit in the nginx config. Running ab on the same host is fine. It is problematic when I run it from a separate host. –  d_ethier Mar 18 '12 at 17:27
