Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Providing automated feedback about usage and errors on my personal equipment helps developers. Apple devices all do it mostly automatically but Microsoft commercial software is pretty much all opt-in.

What should I consider when deciding to enable it on development or production machines (such as SQL Server etc) at work?

  • Security (what data is sent, how it is sent and whether it provides a larger attack surface).
  • Privacy (I want to be helpful, but not identified).
  • Bandwidth.
  • Law.
  • Anything else.

Apple devices require opt-in, AFAIK. –  ceejayoz Mar 15 '12 at 17:18
