I have a private network that had 3 servers before. Now that I added a fourth, I tried to set up public key authentication from the main entry point to this new server. However, the usual procedure doesn't work, for some reason.

I've generated public keys that work with the other 2 servers, added the public keys to the new host's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file and verified that /etc/ssh/sshd_config contains PubkeyAuthentication yes. However, I keep getting the password prompt.

Suggestions?

Here's a debug log from an attempted connection:

For some reason, SELinux denied access to authorized_keys from sshd. Fixed this with /sbin/restorecon -v ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Have you considered using the ssh-copy-id command instead of manually copying keys into the files?

For example, running ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub server4 would copy the current user's key to your new server and update the authorized key file.

Makes the key transfer process a little less fiddly.

That's a good suggestion, but the problem wasn't with the keys themselves, but with the SELinux permissions of the authorized_keys file, and this method wouldn't have affected that problem. Apr 20, 2012 at 23:54
  • Yes, saw that above. I've seen the same problem come from badly-pasted keys, so it might be helpful for other users who find this thread later.
