Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

We are going to run a DNS server in our company and we want to test it before we allow our users make DNS requests using the server. I want to be able to simulate huge load on the DNS server and I want to see when it breaks. Is there a software solution to do this? I can create a multi-threaded application to make parallel, random DNS requests but that wouldn't be a good enough test.. my machine won't be powerful enough. I want to simulate thousands of users from different networks making a large number of DNS requests. Is there hardware out there that we can use to test our server thoroughly?

Many thanks :).

It's not clear if you asking about software or hardware. As for the latter, you could rent cloud VPSes, like Amazon EC2, rackspace etc. and install your proggie there. Will be cheap - you pay per-hour and you probably don't need this stress-test for very long. –  Sandman4 May 3 '12 at 10:37
Will this be a DNS server available to the public? –  joeqwerty May 3 '12 at 11:13
