Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have SBS 2003 server and recently the DHCP service has stopped - almost daily for the past 5 days or so. I have restarted the service and all seems ok until it stops again.

I dont have too much knowledge with server 2003 (bu8t enough to set it up and have it working for the past 6 months!) The server was donated to us which I formatted and re-installed the OS.

I recently ran virus scan which was clean.

There are no other DHCP servers - internet router has this disabled and have a wireless access point configured which no DGCP.

I am wondering if someone can give me some advice on what to look for and to check?

Thank you

Start by checking the Event Logs on the server. –  joeqwerty May 8 '12 at 10:30

thank you, I checked the event log and found an DHCP error with another DHCP server on one of the test machines (it was a program that got started accidentally that I experimented with tftp with which had DHCP enabled!). I can't understand why SBS 2003 will shut this service down when it detects a conflict. Only time will tell if this is fixed! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. –  belliez May 8 '12 at 16:41

That's how SBS is designed. If it detects another active DHCP server on the subnet it will shut down it's own DHCP service. –  joeqwerty May 8 '12 at 17:04
