Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

We are having an issue with our Linux server recently that is causing us to lose SSH, SFTP and FTP access. Despite this, the server stays online and the 'front end' works fine.

The error that SFTP gives is:

FTP connection error - The current connection has timeout
Can't establish connection --> ###.###.##.###:22 @ Fri May 11 14:27:25 2012   (10038-1460)
Connection Failed

We are using Plesk Panel on the server, as well as Smartfox.

Access to SSH/SFTP/FTP never restores until we rollback to a backup.

Whilst I appreciate this information is limited, does anyone have an idea on what could be causing such things?

Check the logs on the server. –  Oliver May 11 '12 at 13:38

When you say 'rollback' do you mean just rebooting doesn't fix the issue either? Or does a straight reboot also help? –  EightBitTony May 11 '12 at 13:40

Firewall? /etc/ssh/sshd_config? TCPwrappers (i.e., /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny)? –  cjc May 11 '12 at 14:05

This article would perhaps refer to a solution of a similar problem:

http://kb.parallels.com/en/1533 FTP connection is taking a long time and even may fail with the "connection timeout" error sometimes.

Please make sure your server listen ssh and ftp port.

# netstat -atnp | grep LISTEN
Must have :
0.0.0.0:22
0.0.0.0:21

Or port where you have already assign in config file. Ssh : /etc/ssh/sshd_config.conf ftp : depend on your ftp application

Then check your linux firewall, iptables.

# iptables -nL
# iptables -nvL to check packet

And make sure your user corrected

@lain are you sure you commented the right answer? Seems that the below answer by Sergey L needs that attention :) (checked answer history) –  djechelon May 12 '12 at 13:26
