Due to browsing through stack exchange and google, I'm getting the feeling it has to do with my hosts file. Which is currently rw-r--r--, and contains:

#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1     localhost.localdomain   localhost

Also, my relevant (hopefully) httpd.conf section is:

ServerName 192.168.1.3

Although I've tried localhost and 127.0.0.1 for ServerName. The local IP of the box is the 192.168.1.3 ip.

The error I'm getting is:

[Thu May 17 07:50:44 2012] [alert] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "(none)"
Configuration Failed

I'm working off of an ArchLinux install, with Apache installed from the package manager.

Any help? I'm new to Arc

[Edit]: Adding my wall of text httpd.conf, note that I usually customize this a bit, but I reverted back to stock in hopes I could figure out the issue:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80

  • I think you need to provide more details like the full configuration of your apache server.

  • @Khaled - thank you, I've added the apache configuration. It is very vanilla though.

  • If you won't be using mod_unique_id.so you could just comment it out in the config.

  • @Sašo that did the trick (kind of), Apache now starts without failure. If you add it as an answer I can accept for future visitors to this page. Now I just gotta figure out the next set of issues.

While not the ideal solution if you need it, disabling mod_unique_id should fix the issue at hand.

#LoadModule unique_id_module modules/mod_unique_id.so

  • Thanks. I disabled "unique_id_module" and it worked.

In case anyone else encounters this, here's how I solved it on Gentoo: make sure the ServerName inside /etc/apache2/httpd.conf matches an address or an alias from your /etc/hosts file.

next thing you want to make sure is that you have these 2 lines inside /etc/host.conf:

order hosts, bind
multi on

these lines tells apache to consult /etc/hosts file thus it can find the name server there.

1

to fix the error, edit the /etc/hosts file and add your computer ip

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.123   {computerName}

replace {computerName} with your computer name in /etc/hostname

the unique_id module is enabled by libapache2-mod-security2. If you install this mod then the unique_id module will be enabled by it.Following error will occur in ec2s:

[unique_id:alert] [pid 2228:tid 140228395538304] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: AH01564: unable to find IPv4 address of "ip-10-X-X-XX" AH00016: Configuration Failed

To be able to start apache, disable module security2 then unique_id.
