Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Recently I have rented a web space and the notify mail said i can go to the page to check if everythings working.

At the first time you try to go to your http://www.yourdomain.com If you see a blank page and list that mean your DNS Record has been updated. If you cannot see that page. That may be DNS Record has not been updated, may be your website, email,... under yourdomain.com also run at your old hosting company. If your domain name is registration or transfer by us, you need to contact our hostmaster. Otherwise, please contact your DNR(Domain Name Registration Provider) or your DNS or Domain Administrator as soon as possible to update the DNS server to our DNS server.

Then i have working around on the ftp, however, after a while i found that i can not go to that page anymore.

Server error!

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Error 500

www.yourdomain.com Mon May 21 22:45:28 2012 UHS

Questions are:

What is the reason of error 500? as it is general error after i google a while, how can i obtain more information of the cause of error?

p.s i am wondering whether i have deleted the configure file on the ftp (or since there are some file on that ftp by default, i may delete those file carelessly?)

Normally there would be more information in the error log of the server. Without knowing exactly what is causing the error it is hard to guess what the issue could be. did you adjust anything in regards to the directory index file? –  Doon May 21 '12 at 15:17
thx for the reply. I can't exactly recall what have been modify , can i have a list of what file is related to this error so i can check whether i have delete that file? –  user782104 May 21 '12 at 15:24
There really isn't a list as it is pretty much a general error. So it could be anything from a misconfigured .htaccess file, to a permission issue on the index page if running under suexec, to a broken cgi script. –  Doon May 21 '12 at 16:31
What webserver are you using? Is there a logfile you can post? –  MichelZ May 21 '12 at 16:57
