  /web_db/mysql_server/conf.d/* r,
  /web_db/mysql_server/*.cnf r,
  /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/ r,
  /usr/lib/mysql/plugin/*.so* mr,
  /usr/sbin/mysqld mr,
  /usr/share/mysql/** r,
  /web_db/log/mysql.log rw,
  /web_db/log/mysql.err rw,
  /web_db/mysql/ r,
  /web_db/mysql/** rwk,
  /web_db/log/mysql/ r,
  /web_db/log/mysql/* rw,
  /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid w,

What do the logs say? –  mgorven Jun 18 '12 at 0:50

no log file exists –  Assad Ullah Jun 19 '12 at 16:18

You should add an error log file like: log-error=/var/log/mysqld51.log in the my.cnf mysql config file and check what it says when you're trying to start mysql. Alternatively you could try to start mysqld directly by invoking it from the command line and see what errors it throws. Also would be good to check that the moved database files - /var/lib/mysql - belong to the mysql user. –  Logic Wreck Jun 20 '12 at 11:17

It looks like that tutorial you are following is based on this article I wrote for Amazon: aws.amazon.com/articles/1663 You might try following my original article to see if you get better results. You should not need to modify any AppArmor settings if you are using bind mounts. Note that "/dev/sdh" should be spelled "/dev/xvdh" on modern Ubuntu on EC2. –  Eric Hammond Jun 22 '12 at 2:05
