I'm having a rather odd issue where, when trying to ping the FQDN of server.organization.local from one of my hosts, I receive the following message:

Ping request could not find host . Please check the name and try again.

At the same time, I'm able to ping the hostname without any of the additional suffixes added.

I'm running Windows Small Business Server 2011, with DNS on the server itself, and DHCP on a hardware firewall. What troubleshooting steps should I take to resolve this? What could some of the potential problems be that would cause this issue?

How's DNS configured on the client devices' network interfaces (which is probably being given to them by the DHCP server)? – Shane Madden Jun 20 '12 at 19:15

@David What I mean is, what is the configuration? Are the clients being pointed to the SBS server as their only DNS server, or are there others? Or are they not pointed to it at all? The symptoms you're describing indicate that they're pointed somewhere else for DNS, and only successfully resolving the server's name through NetBIOS broadcast name resolution. – Shane Madden Jun 20 '12 at 19:21
